Progesterone Testing
To determine when the female will be most fertile and able to sustain a pregnancy, we need to assess her progesterone levels. We perform this test several days after the animal has entered their heat cycle, and can repeat the test every few days. Once the progesterone has reached optimal levels, we can help you establish a breeding schedule. Ovulation can occur when progesterone levels reach about 5 ng/ml.
Artificial Insemination
Artificial insemination involves placing semen in the female via catheter when the male is absent. This procedure is particularly useful if both the male and female show no interest in mating, or if they live in different parts of the country.
Ultrasonography
With ultrasound, we can diagnose and monitor pregnancies by seeing inside the womb to determine the number and size of the puppies (or kittens). It can also help us determine whether a C-section will be necessary to keep the mother and her offspring safe.
